Campus fire safety

Subject: Campus fire safety

Given the two recent fires near UC Santa Cruz and a red flag warning issued by the National Weather Service, we write to remind the community that we need to do everything we can to prevent wildfires.

Anyone who smells smoke or sees a fire must immediately call 911.

As we have seen, the danger to our campus is real. The threat of fire on or adjacent to our campus is serious and potentially devastating; current dry conditions have created an explosive environment.

No one should be smoking or starting small campfires anywhere on campus or the public land surrounding campus.

The red flag warning for the Santa Cruz Mountains notes that strong winds and dry conditions will enable fires to spread rapidly.
