Subject: Chemical incident on Science Hill
Late yesterday, incompatible chemicals were inadvertently mixed together in a lab in the Physical Sciences Building, creating a potentially hazardous situation. Fortunately, no one was injured and no damage occurred.
In an abundance of caution, the UC Santa Cruz Police Department, the Santa Cruz Fire Department, and the Office of Environmental Health and Safety removed the solution from the laboratory and took it to an area where it was rendered safe through a contained explosion that destroyed the chemicals. Some members of the community may have heard this happen.
I appreciate the campus community's patience and everyone's quick response and collaborative approach to handling this incident.
