Subject: Community Alert - Seeking assistance with burglaries, thefts

The UC Santa Cruz Police Department is seeking the community’s help in investigating a series of crimes that began March 4, 2021.

In the past week, the department has received two burglary reports involving a building and vehicle at the Coastal Science Campus. The suspect(s) stole laptops and other UCSC property. 

The crimes include:

• Between 6 p.m. March 4 and 7:20 a.m. March 5, a suspect or suspects entered an office and stole two drones, three laptops and several GPS's, a Honda generator and hand tools. The same suspect(s) may also have entered a UCSC vehicle and stolen items. 

• Between 6 p.m. March 5 and 8:20 a.m. March 8, a suspect or suspects entered an office and stole two broken drones housed in large, dark colored pelican cases, projectors, laptops, external hard drives, keyboards and a duffel bag.  

Anyone who has information regarding these incidents is asked to call the campus dispatch center at 831-459-2231, Ext. 1. All suspicious activities should be reported as soon as possible to the UC Santa Cruz Police Department. Timely reporting allows the department to keep the campus safe, take precautions for personal safety, and to help locate those responsible.

Safety Tips

• If you feel you or others are in danger, immediately call 911.

• Report all in-progress crimes, or suspected crimes, by calling 911 from any landline or cell phone. Reports may also be made by utilizing one of the several "blue light," emergency or elevator phones located throughout campus.

• Suspicious people or activity also should be reported to the UC Santa Cruz Police Department by calling 911, when it is safe to do so.

• Be alert to your surroundings. Your actions can help prevent others from becoming victims. Attempt to keep a safe distance from strangers.

• Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, tell someone, avoid the person or leave the area.

• Do not leave valuable items unsecured and unattended.
