Engineering and Traffic Survey

A driver and a UC Santa Cruz police officer talk to a passing turkey

In compliance with State laws and the governing California Vehicle Code, vehicle speed laws can only be enforced when speed limits of a roadway are determined by an engineering and traffic survey.

The Engineering and Traffic Survey is an engineering study of the prevailing speeds and a review the traffic conditions of the roadway which is completed every five years for streets greater than 40’ in width, regardless of the street’s classification. The local streets have a prima facie speed limit of 25 mph unless a different speed limit is determined by an engineering study. Speed limits in California are governed by the California Vehicle Code (CVC), Section 627, 22348 through 22413 and 40802.
