Physical Security Systems

One of the UC Santa Cruz PD's security cameras

UC Santa Cruz is committed to enhancing the quality of life of the campus community by integrating the best practices of campus safety with state of the art technology. At UC Santa Cruz, our Physical Security Systems (PSS) are designed to protect people, facilities, equipment, and property from harm or damage at all times of the day and night.

The Physical Securtiy Team is a partnership between the campus police department and ITS Staff dedicated to the administration of physical security systems.

The PSS team conducts security assessments, makes recomendations as to the appropriate security posture for individual units and the campus as a whole. Coordinates the installation operation and ongoing maintenance and repair of all physical security systems on the campus.

To request a security assessment or consultation, please contact Jason Moore at (831) 502-7377 or email him at jasmoore@ucsc.edu.

Alarm Monitoring

Here at UC Santa Cruz, our alarm monitoring systems are observed by the UCSC Police Department Dispatch Center. This local and centralized unit on campus provides for immediate response to locations around the campus rather than reporting to a vendor outside of US Santa Cruz.

Security alarms are highly reliable and effective for meeting security needs for our campus environment. All alarms on UC Santa Cruz premises must be registered with the Police Department and clients must make the effort to reduce false alarms from occurring or run the risk of receiving a fine for repeated offenses.

Access Control Systems

At UC Santa Cruz, we employ the usage of security systems for buildings on campus that need to utilize more conventional security standards through an assesment by our Physical Security Systems team.

We use multiple systems dependent upon the level of security required for a facility.

  • We have systems that allow for 24/7 monitoring via our campus dispatch operations center
  • We offer systems for lower security facilities that eliminate the use of brass keys in favor of electronic access control
  • Housing maintains a proprietary system to control access to individual housing units

For access to department buildings for after-hours use or to register for electronic access, contact your department’s office for more information. For information on ID Card Services, read the section below.

ID Cards at UCSC

The use of Identification (ID) Cards are critical to allow access to various campus offices and services through identifying students, staff, faculty, and service providers on campus grounds.

ID Cards secures access to campus facilities and helps ensure safety by restricting access to authorized users.

It is recommended to carry your ID card with you at all times when you are present on campus. For more information on ID cards, please check the Bay Tree Bookstore ID Card Services.

Public Safety Camera Systems

Public Safety Cameras at UC Santa Cruz are installed in various locations on our main campus, Coastal Sciences campus, and our facilities at 2300 Delaware. These safety cameras are installed to reduce the likelihood of crime and to enhance public safety.

Duress Buttons

Under specific circumstances, the UC Santa Cruz Police employs the usage of panic alarm systems to help meet the needs of the campus community. These systems are installed where the risk to community safety is heightened. These systems should only be used in emergency situations.

Activating this system elicits an immediate, emergent response from the University Police and should be used only when it is not safe, practical, or possible to call 911.
