Subject: Investigation Completed in Possible Bias-Related Incident

From: Chief of Police, Nader Oweis

On July 2, 2020 we received a report of an incident whereby a rope was thrown onto street signs at the main entrance.  We have concluded our investigation.

Video images showed four (4) individuals throwing the rope onto the street signs after several attempts, taking a picture of the rope hanging from the signs, and then leaving the area.  The four responsible persons were identified as UC Santa Cruz students.  They were interviewed, and  cooperated with the police investigation.  Based on the facts gathered the investigation concluded a crime was not committed.

Although this incident was not classified as a crime, it does not diminish the impact or harm this incident had on the UC Santa Cruz community.  As such, this matter has been referred to the Dean of Students Conduct and Standards Office for further review and administrative adjudication.
