Subject:  Annual training exercise for active shooter, June 19 to 23
A training exercise sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Police Department will be held from June 19 to 23 at the Division of the Arts complex (Baskin Visual Arts and Theater Arts complexes). This training is expected to begin at about 8 a.m. each day, last throughout the day, and end at 6 p.m.
The training is designed to prepare our police department, local allied law enforcement agencies, and local fire agencies on how to respond to an active shooter incident using the latest tactics and equipment available.
As such, some areas around the Arts Division (Baskin Visual Arts and Theater Arts complexes) and adjacent parking lots will be cordoned off by yellow tape and signs, and will be off-limits to anyone not participating in the training exercises. A section of Kerr Road will also be closed from the Performing Arts Lot past the Media Theater. The Performing Arts lot will be open for parking.  In addition, those near the area may hear sounds of screaming, simulated gun fire, simulated explosions, and other noises as part of the training.
This annual training is a continuation of ongoing efforts to prepare the campus for workplace violence and active shooter incidents.
These training sessions are not open to the public. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, but it is imperative that these activities take place.
If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the UC Santa Cruz Police Department at 831-459-2231, ext 1.
